How are schools engaging students in learning?

Some schools have created an online survey for students, across a cluster. They will use the results to decide on next steps for their individual schools and for the growth of learners across the cluster. Do you find this valuable?

Sheryl

this is certainly an interesting focus for schools to have - and I note the survey that you have recently posted on this as a starter for gathering ideas. A key thing in this discussion is to develop some understandings of (a) what we mean by engagement (and what the indicators of this might be that we'd look for), and (b) the differences that exist between what parents and teachers may consider as 'engagement' and what the students may consider. There is plenty of evidence emerging to challenge existing ideas of what we may have traditionally thought of as engagement - particularly when we think about the use of digital and online technologies. What many educators may consider time wasting and frivolous is considered by students to be important to them at some point in their information processing process - and conversely, there are examples of things that may be assumed to be engaging to teachers that simply turn students off.

Examples of each might be...
(a) the student who appears to be aimlessly surfing through sites on the internet, following links blindly may in fact be completely engaged in the "immersion" phase of the inquiry process. What s/he needs is to be introduced to some means of recording what s/he sees as potentially relevant - eg a mind-map in inspiration etc.
(b) the teacher who sets up a blog as a requirement for reflection by students, and finds that they are not inclined to use it.

The key thing here is to resolve some of the understandings of what engagement is so that subsequent observations and data gathering have a relevant focus.
Do you find this valuable?

thinking more about engagement (particularly in a digital world) I thought the following slideshows from SlideShare might be useful:

Engaging young people online, Waddya Reckon? - http://www.slideshare.net/sablyth/engaging-young-people-online-whaddya-reckon?src=related_normal&rel=36264

Online engagement - http://www.slideshare.net/pbw/online-engagement?src=related_normal&rel=131249 (a nice diagram of the dimensions of engagement in the middle of this one)

Also some useful research on this from the UK in a document titled "Creating and Connecting - Research and Guidelines on social and educational networking" which contains some really useful evidence and guidelines to inform our practice in schools. It can be downloaded as a PDF from: http://www.nsba.org/SecondaryMenu/TLN/CreatingandConnecting.aspx
